Our Social Studies topic for the term.

At the beginning of the term our class started doing research on the Kapiti Coast. We were looking at the boundaries and we decided the Otaki River to the north and Paekakariki to the south would be the area we looked at.
We had to describe the area, then take our own street and describe that. We put the published copy on the wall with the map of the area. We had to find where our homes were and put a pin with our name on in the right place. That was quite hard for some of us.
We also talked to our parents about where they worked and they worked out of the Kapiti area. We asked them about why they chose to live here too. Some live here because they have their wider family here, some because they looked us up on the internet and liked what they saw. There were lots of reasons.
We know that lots of people travel to Wellington and to Palmerston North to work but they like to come back here in the evenings and weekends.
We are now starting to ask questions about the history of Kapiti. We know some of the streets are named after people who were important here. That’s our next challenge.
